New year at the castle

The New Year’s show at Örebro Castle attracted 35,000 visitors, setting a destination milestone.

In 2019, the success story of ‘The Magical Machine’ reached a stunning crescendo with a specially produced New Year’s show projected onto Örebro’s iconic 700-year-old castle. Featuring local legends like Millencolin, Lolita Pop and The Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the show created a spectacular party vibe as 35,000 visitors gathered to ring in the 2020s.

With the technology already in place, adding a New Year’s show was an easy and smart decision.

Originally, the projection show ‘The Magical Machine’ entertained audiences until Boxing Day. However, during the planning of the 2019 edition, Örebrokompaniet sparked the idea of extending the run to include New Year’s Eve—a perfect opportunity to ring in the new decade with flair.

This concept blossomed into a New Year’s Special that would premiere right after the final showing of The Magical Machine at 11:30 PM on New Year’s Eve. The special, a pre-recorded program, would illuminate Örebro’s iconic castle while celebrating the town’s leading artists and their remarkable achievements over the past year.

As the clock drew close to midnight, the show reached its climax with a countdown, followed by a dazzling fireworks display. The grand finale invited everyone to join in a singalong to ABBA’s ‘Happy New Year.’

To create this celebration, we travelled to concerts and filmed internationally acclaimed Millencolin, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, national treasure Lolita Pop, and rising stars Freddie Liljegren, Shaqdi, Saliboy, and Cherie. After capturing their performances, the footage was edited into a 20-minute production designed to seamlessly integrate with the castle’s stunning architecture.

The result? A breathtaking celebration that drew an astonishing 35,000 visitors, setting a new record for New Year’s gatherings in Örebro. This unforgettable evening not only welcomed a new decade but also showcased the rich culture of the region, firmly establishing ‘The Magical Machine’ as a beloved highlight of Örebro’s festive calendar.
